Who We Are

Kathu Cats & Kitten Rescues is a registered NPC based in Kathu, Northern Cape. A volunteer-driven team runs the day-to-day work — no paid staff. Just the work.

What We Do

We rescue abandoned and injured kittens, provide medical care, sterilise to prevent future suffering, rehabilitate, and find responsible homes for kittens that are ready.

Why It Matters

Kathu has a significant stray and abandoned cat problem. Without intervention, it compounds — more kittens, more suffering, more cost. We're working to change that, one cat at a time.

The Situation

The Reality on the Ground

Kathu is a mining town in the Northern Cape with a persistent stray and abandoned cat population. When families move — and in a town tied to mining contracts, they do — cats are left behind. They breed. They struggle. They show up injured, malnourished, or in desperate need of care that no one is providing.

There are no shelters or SPCAs nearby. No municipal animal welfare infrastructure. The burden falls entirely on individuals who choose to step in. The cost of a single vet visit, a sterilisation, or an emergency treatment comes directly out of pocket — or from donations that are never guaranteed and never enough.

This isn't a passion project with a comfortable budget. It's a daily effort to keep animals alive and reduce long-term suffering through sterilisation — the only intervention that actually works. We are not catching up. But we are making a dent, and we intend to keep making it.

Numbers That Matter

Every figure here represents the scale of the work being done. The yearly ranges reflect four years of consistent effort.

4 Years Active This has been going on for four years
100-120 Adoptions / year A steady flow of cats into safe homes
20-40 Sterilisations / year The work that prevents future suffering

This work runs at a loss.

Every donation keeps it going — directly funding vet bills, sterilisations, and emergency rescues.
